News & press releasesNEW aquatic weed control video launched on the webSCONSA Environmental Services has launched the first of its new short films to demonstrate the equipment and services it offers. The first 4 minute video, explains in detail how the berky weed harvester owned and operated by SCONSA ES works. EU Ban on Weed Killers Hits FisheriesFollowing the EU ban on the use of all herbicides on lakes and other waterways, such as rivers and canals, many fishery owners are concerned that aquatic weed is set to reach epidemic proportions. The new laws came into force in April this year and it is becoming apparent that several fisheries are already suffering excessive weed growth that they unable to treat effectively. Over the next few years the problem could escalate to epidemic proportions as untreated weed spreads throughout our water ways. All is not lost, however, and companies such as SCONSA Environmental Services could be the saviour of our lakes and rivers. The company provides various services to fishery owners, such as dredging, weed cutting and harvesting. Carp-Trade spoke to March Pratley from Orchid Lakes and said his venue has been utilising the SCONSA weed-cutting and harvesting equipment as a result of the weed killer ban. Marsh said: "The ban will affect every single watercourse in the country. We could end up with virtually nowhere to fish! Cutting and harvesting equipment is excellent, but it is quite expensive and I can't see small clubs or fishery owners being able to afford the equipment. Another problem is that as weed dies back it can lower the oxygen content of the water, co causing problems for the carp. From a fishery owner's point of view, any un-fishable swim is a liability, so in some cases we've tried removing the weed by hand, which is backbreaking work. On the plus side, the equipment cuts and collects all the weed and stirs up the bottom, which aids the growth of beneficial bacteria. We are expecting to see some good growth in fish weights as a result." The SCONSA website gives full detail of all the company's activities, which include fishery management, dredging, and aeration equipment. Visit www.sconsa-es.co.uk for more information. Another option open to clubs and fishery owners is Dyofix which is a product which inhibits the growth of algae and weed by actually dyeing the water to cut down the amount of light.
AMEC - Water Dams - Environmental Best PracticeA change in pipe installation method meant that the project had to open-cut the pipeline route across the Stoke Marshes SPA and Ramsar site. In order to complete the project within the necessary timescales this included open-cutting Stoke Great Fleet, an inland water body, approximately 1km long, 100m wide and up to 2m deep. It is an important and sensitive feature for wildfowl within the SPA site. However, a suitable engineering solution put forward was accepted by Natural England and DECC.
